Can tragedies happen in the 21st century?
  • Some people think not - tragedies require life and abstract things to be valued and center around the choice to forego consequences for value - in the 21st century, people are more nihilistic - evolution and science makes life seem like it's of less central importance
  • Yes - we live in the world around us and things still have meaning

Steps to get over blame
  • Must admit involvement and then get others - phrase it as in the past
    • Example is McCarthyism - this applies to all kinds of witch hunts, not just actual witches
  • Confessing expressed a wish to come to God's side

Tituba

  • Goody Good and Goody Osburn are the next below slaves - the most likely to be lured in by slaves
  • Poor seems to equal bad - the richer you are the more sense you have
  • Elizabeth proctor wants to get Abbey - but she can't yet because Abbey is further up the social chain
  • Tituba rats out Sarah Good -

Abbey's Confession

  • Abbey realizes how to clear her name, so she confesses
  • Causes a chain reaction! All of these girls come out and blame other people - the focus becomes off of them and onto someone else
  • Confessing is key
